Description
Jesus stands beneath the spreading sycamore tree and places His hand upon Zacchaeus, the wealthy chief tax collector of Jericho. The crowd watches from the street as the once-despised sinner receives the personal attention of the Lord. The city gate and gathered townspeople frame the moment when Zacchaeus comes down from the tree and is welcomed by Christ.
Drawn from Luke 19:1-10, the scene declares the mercy of the Son of Man, who came “to seek and to save the lost.” Zacchaeus had climbed the tree simply to see Jesus, but Jesus saw him first, called him by name, and brought salvation to his house. The image is well suited for teaching themes of repentance, grace, hospitality, forgiveness, and Christ’s pursuit of outsiders.
