The Lion and the Disobedient Prophet

The man of God from Judah lies fallen beside the road while a lion stands over him and his donkey remains unharmed nearby. Travelers approach the fearful scene, including a robed witness at the left, as the road stretches toward a distant settlement. The composition follows the account in 1 Kings 13, where the prophet who had delivered God’s warning at Bethel disobeyed the command not to eat, drink, or return by the same way. After departing, he was met by a lion and killed, yet the lion did not devour the body or attack the donkey—an unmistakable sign of divine judgment rather than ordinary violence.

The scene emphasizes the holiness of God’s word and the seriousness of prophetic obedience. It is suited for teaching on discernment, accountability, compromised calling, and the danger of departing from a clear command of the Lord.
