The scene portrays the Old Testament sin offering, where guilt was confessed and atonement was sought through the shedding of blood according to the law given through Moses. The hand placed on the sacrifice signifies identification and transfer: the animal dies in the place of the guilty worshiper. For Christian teaching, this image points beyond the Tabernacle ritual to the final sufficiency of Christ, the Lamb of God, whose sacrifice fulfills the need for atonement once and for all.
