1 În anul al treilea al domniei lui Ioiachim, regele lui Iuda, a pornit Nabucodonosor, regele Babilonului, împotriva Ierusalimului şi 1-a împresurat.2 Şi a dat Domnul în mâna lui pe Ioiachim, regele lui Iuda, şi o parte din vasele templului lui Dumnezeu, pe care le-a dus în ţara Şinear, in templul dumnezeului lui şi a aşezat aceste vase în vistieria acestui dumnezeu.3 Şi a zis regele către Aşpenaz, cel mai mare peste famenii săi, să aducă dintre fiii lui Israel, din neam regesc şi din cei din viţă aleasă,4 Patru tineri fără nici un cusur trupesc, frumoşi la chip şi iscusiţi în toată înţelepciunea, cunoscători a toată ştiinţa, cu adâncă putere de pătrundere şi plini de râvnă, ca să slujească in palatul regelui, ca să-i înveţe pe ei scrisul şi limba Caldeilor.5 Şi să-i înveţe pe ei vreme de trei ani, după trecerea cărora să intre în slujba regelui. Pentru aceasta, regele le-a rânduit să li se dea în fiecare zi bucate din bucatele lui şi vin din vinul lui.6 Printre ei se aflau din fiii lui Iuda: Daniel, Anania, Misael şi Azaria.7 Şi căpetenia famenilor le-a dat nume şi a chemat pe Daniel, Beltşaţar, pe Anania, Şadrac, pe Misael, Meşac şi pe Azaria, Abed-Nego.8 şi Daniel şi-a pus in gând să nu se spurce cu bucatele şi vinul regelui şi a cerut voie căpeteniei famenilor să nu se pângărească.9 Şi Dumnezeu i-a dat să afle înaintea căpeteniei famenilor bunăvoinţă şl îndurare.10 " Şi a zis căpetenia famenilor către Daniel: ""Mă tem numai de domnul meu, regele, care v-a rânduit mîncărurile şi băuturile; pentru ce să vadă el mai trase chipurile voastre decât ale tinerilor celor de o vârstă cu voi? Voi puneţi în primejdie capul meu înaintea regelui.11 " Şi a grăit Daniel către supraveghetorul pe care căpetenia famenilor îl pusese peste Daniel, Anania, Misael şi Azaria:12 " ""Încearcă o dată cu servii tăi timp de zece zile şi dă-ne să mâncăm bucate din zarzavaturi şi să bem apă!13 "" Apoi să te uiţi la chipurile noastre şi la chipul tinerilor care mănâncă din bucatele regelui şi cum ţi se va părea, aşa fă cu supuşii tăi!""14 " Atunci el le-a ascultat această rugăminte şi a încercat timp de zece zile.15 Şi după un răstimp de zece zile, ei arătau mai frumoşi şi mai graşi la trup decât toţi tinerii care mâncau din bucatele regelui.16 Atunci supraveghetorul le-a înlocuit mâncarea lor şi vinul - băutura dor - şi le-a dat mâncăruri de legume.17 Şi acestor patru tineri le-a dat Dumnezeu ştiinţă şi pricepere în oricare scriere, precum şi înţelepciune, încât Daniel putea să tâlcuiască vedeniile şi visele.18 Şi după acel răstimp hotărât de rege ca să-i aducă, i-a înfăţişat căpetenia famenilor înaintea lui Nabucodonosor.19 Şi a grăit regele cu ei, dar n-a aflat pe nimeni printre ei toţi ca pe Daniel, Anania, Misael şi Azaria. Şi ei au început să slujească pe rege.20 Şi în toate întrebările, asupra cărora regele le cerea dezlegarea, când era vorba de înţelepciune şi de pricepere, îi găsea pe ei de zece ori mai isteţi decât magii şi prezicătorii din tot regatul lui.21 Şi a rămas Daniel acolo până în anul întâi al domniei lui Cirus.
Jeremiah 40
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he took him bound in chains along with all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon.2 The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, “The LORD your God pronounced this disaster against this place.3 The LORD has brought it about, and has done as he said. Because you sinned against the LORD and did not obey his voice, this thing has come upon you.4 Now, behold, I release you today from the chains on your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you well, but if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, do not come. See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think it good and right to go.5 If you remain, then return to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon appointed governor of the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people. Or go wherever you think it right to go.” So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance of food and a present, and let him go.6 Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah, and lived with him among the people who were left in the land.7 When all the captains of the forces in the open country and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed to him men, women, and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been taken into exile to Babylon,8 they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.9 Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.10 As for me, I will dwell at Mizpah, to represent you before the Chaldeans who will come to us. But as for you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and store them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.”11 Likewise, when all the Judeans who were in Moab and among the Ammonites and in Edom and in other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, as governor over them,12 then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they had been driven and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah. And they gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance.13 Now Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah14 and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them.15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Please let me go and strike down Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life, so that all the Judeans who are gathered about you would be scattered, and the remnant of Judah would perish?”16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you are speaking falsely of Ishmael.”

46 Woe to you, O Moab! The people of Chemosh are undone, for your sons have been taken captive, and your daughters into captivity.
